Anuhea Takes Me “Higher Than The Clouds”

I have an eclectic taste in music that ranges from old school Motown, R&B, Reggae, Soul, Jazz, and a deep appreciation from good sounds and lyrics from all genres and artists. Growing up in Georgia and California and living in Hawai’i definitely will expand your musical taste buds. People who know me a little better, or have taken a ride with me in my car know I’m also somewhat of a repeat offender when it comes to music. When I hear a song that I like, it’s almost as if I go through a sudden “honeymoon” phase with the lyrics and/or beat and listen to it on repeat until another song takes over. One might wonder how I ever discover a new song. Well, sometimes I might tune into the radio but honestly I tend to discover a song when I’m with my friends and their radio is going and I’m like “Whoa, whoa, what/who is this?” I recently had that ‘Whoa’ experience with a song entitled “Higher Than The Clouds” by singer/songwriter Anuhea. 

The melody, lyrics, hook, and rhythm of this track instantly made me press the repeat button without hesitation and letting my mind run some place where the sands meet the stars and Anuhea‘s voice was leading me there. “Higher Than The Clouds” also made it into my playlist for putting on makeup, which may not sound like “all that jazz”, but that playlist at the moment only has names like Mary J. Blige, Beyonce, Mariah Carey, Billie Holiday, India Arie (“Brown Skin” is one of my all time faves), Etta James, and now Anuhea. “Higher Than The Clouds”, at least for me is a tribute to blissful affection (and when the birds meet the bees) that is relatable to any man or woman who has ever met a person (or longed) for someone who changes our senses and sweep us off our feet. The reggae-tinged pop infusion adds to Anuhea’s natural ability to transcend the stage and take a crowd with her to a bon-fire on the beach for a jam session with her guitar. The song in three words is sexy, sensual, and bliss.

Even if you’re late on the bandwagon or already a full-fledged Anu-Hail-Her (like my friends who totally held my feet to the fire for being so late. And for the record I’ve heard of her name, it’s just up until that point I just hadn’t had the opportunity to hear her work until now; but one chorus into “Higher Than The Clouds” I certified myself as a fan, and I think you will too), check out Anuhea’s latest single “Higher Than The Clouds” on iTunes, as well as some of her other hits. But, the latest class of spokeswomen are taking on a representation of the clientele Carol’s Daughter has; which is multi-racial. The brand itself caters to a variety of backgrounds which is why the choice of singers’ Cassie and Solange Knowles, as well as, model Selita Ebanks, make a perfect combination for the next phase in growth of Carol’s Daughter and celebrating the beauty of blending.“They will serve as cultural ambassadors in bringing forth this acceptance  that the definition of beauty is now colorless,” said Steve Stoute.  “There are no  longer boxes of white, black, Latina, Asian. More and more women are  checking the other box.” Cassie, who is of black and Filipina descent, or Ebanks, who has Jamaican, Irish, Indian and African heritage and grew up in the Cayman Islands.  Knowles is of  African-American and French Creole descent.

The first campaign features the Monai Repairing Collection (a nourishing three-step hair system)  which launches on carolsdaughter.com and in Sephora stores May 1. “Carol’s Daughter doesn’t have just one direct demographic,” said Ebanks.  “Solange’s hair is a different texture than mine; so is Cassie’s. Our skin and body types are different. Today, people are blended, and I think the three of us are a prime example. Women in my family range from vanilla to the deepest chocolate.”

Halle Berry and Jennifer Lopez are both actresses, mothers, and fragrance designers. Both of these beauties are releasing new fragrances this fall, Berry with her newest scent ‘Reveal’ and Lopez with her scent ‘Love & Glamour’. Berry’s ‘Reveal’ is a woodsy floral fragrances with notes of mimosa, peach, honeydew melon, iris blossom, neroli, vetiver, cashmere woods, and skin musk. Lopez’s ‘Love & Glamour’ has notes of Italian mandarin, guava, nectarine pulp, coconut orchid, amber, sensual musk, orange flower, jasmine petals, and sandalwood. 

Lopez recently tweeted “Fashion’s Night Out @FNOnyc is 2nite! Where will U be? I’ll b @ Macy’s Herald Sq launching my new fragrance Love & Glamour. C U there! #FNO” while Berry has been filming ‘Dark Tide’ in South Africa with Oliver Martinez.

Halle Berry already has a couple of successful fragrances under her belt while Lopez has built an empire of fragrances starting with her original ‘Glow’.

Celebrity fragrances are thing new, everyone from Mary J. Blige, Fergie, Beyonce, Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, Kim Kardashian, Shakira, Eva Longoria, and more have one or a few signature fragrances on store shelves.

Even male celebrities like Usher, Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs, Curtis ’50 Cent’ Jackson, and Antonio Banderas have successful lines of male fragrances.

I should probably admit that I’ve never watched an episode of Gossip Girls but I know of cast members like Blake Lively (Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants…. oh yes, I did), and I look forward to seeing Leighton Meester on her appearances (She is always beautiful). I didn’t know much about Taylor Momsen other than she is trying going to be a rockstar. I caught her performance on Letterman and although I mostly have Mary J. Blige, Aaliyah, and Mos Def along with Motown in my Ipod, I do recognize talent from other genres of music. And I do believe Momsen has a great voice and her own style.  Didn’t catch her performance? Hail Mary! The First Lady of Hip-Hop & R&B, Mary J. Blige, has signed on to play legendary singer Nina Simone. Blige has already has film credits to her name with shows 30 Rock and Entourage and films like I Can Do Bad All By Myself but she is now geared to tackle the biggest film role of her career to date.

Nina Simone was an American singer, musician, songwriter who also had her hand in the civil rights era. Her music ranged from jazz to R&B and Gospel. Contemporary musicians who has cited Simone as a great source of influence and inspiration include Alicia Keys, Lauryn Hill, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, and many others including the singer set to play Simone; Mary J. Blige.

I was able to find time to read through my August edition  of Allure, where Blige revealed that she and Nina Simone “have almost the same life. For a long time, I felt about myself how she felt about herself-we go really, really dark.” Both singers have struggled with drugs. Blige admits searching to her past experiences with alcohol abuse, destructive relationships and depression to play the mentally-ill Simone; “I have to go back and be that dark Mary again to bring Nina to life, use it for the character, and then come out.” Blige is even taking French lessons to prepare for her role but make no mistake the strong singer is happy at this point in her life saying “I came out the other side.”

A women’s center has opened  in Yonkers, New York where Blige has memories of women being abused  with the help of this soulful crooner. The center offers GED classes, babysitting, and job preparation. In addition, Blige co-founded the Foundation for the Advancement of Women Now. The foundation will receive proceeds very first fragrance called My Life (also the title of her 1994 album). The fragrance is a collaboration with company Carol’s Daughter, which has notes of gardenia, pear, freesia, and sesame. In reference to the heart-shaped bottle Blige says “So many women are all heart”. With Blige’s experiences and being an inspirational woman, I’m sure she’ll embody the depth and confidence of singer Nina Simone just like the layers of her fragrance; with heart.

Some people think love is a feeling of intoxicating lust while others see it as sacrificial ritual. I feel love is all encompassing; love unites us, divides us, can build you up, and break you down. That’s why when I feel love or pain I also listen to Mary J. Blige to help me get a full and steady grasp on what I’m feeling. Whether I’m looking for that “Real Love” or I need someone who is “Everything”, Mary brightens my own day in her own special way. Even when “I’m Going Down”, her lyrics and vocals let’s me know “It’s a Wrap” and I’m going to be “Just Fine”. I could go through pain and tell myself I’m “Not Goin Cry” because at the very least I should “Take Me As I Am”. With her I reaffirm my decision to have “No More Drama” embrace “Rainy Dayz” for they are there to bring on sunny days. I could go on with how I “Stay Down”, but I only want to Share My World, not give it away.

One of my favorite songs from Mary J. Blige is “All Night Long” and I love this live version.

Honey Pot: Carol’s Daughter Honey Standouts

Featured on the The Today Show, Tyra Banks show, and Oprah; Carol’s Daughter carries a variety of Bath and Body products for skin and hair. While a few products weren’t necessarily to my tastes, wanted to share a few standouts that I personally loved as a well as a few celebrities.

Lisa’s Hair Elixer: Jada Pinkett loves this stuff and credits it for her for her beautiful hair. I can’t get over the smell as it is packed with rosemary and peppermint oils. Whenever I use a dab of this hair oil women ask me what perfume I have on, and I tell them about this product. It smells great, you can even use it as a hot oil treatment. I’m using this and only this in the clip below. A small dime to quarter dollop of this will leave your hair smelling fresh but also keep frizz at bay because it really does moisturize your hair. Frizz is caused by hair “jumping” out to the moisture in the air. Just like you not being able to put twenty gallons in a ten gallon tank, hair needs proper moisture levels to behave properly. If hair is too dry, it jumps out at humidity. If hair is overly moisturized it’s going to be too limp. Find you balance.

 

Hair Balm: I love this stuff for my mixed friends and myself. It’s not too oily, moisturizes hair, and gives great shine. Whenever I use my Sedu for a pinstraight look, I use this balm. Also part of Jada Pinkett’s Dynamic Duo. Tip: If it’s a slightly windy day and you’re going for a super straight look, curl the ends of your hair inwards to lock your style so when it blows around it comes back down in place.

If you are scent-oriented, Carol’s Daughter can tingle your senses. I love owner Lisa Price’s Story if building the brand Carol’s Daughter and starting it out of her kitchen because the majority of her products smell good enough to eat. While a number of her products need to be used in moderation for those who do not prefer a thick and rich consistency, a small amount of product will suffice in giving you soft and sweet smelling skin. I love all her Almond Cookie scented products particularly the sea salt scrub.

Stars like Rihanna (pictured above at a Carol’s Daughter store opening) Eve, Jada Pinkett-Smith, Gabrielle Union, and Beyonce have found products they love at Carol’s Daughter.Additionally Mary J. Blige & Pinkett are a couple of the fabulous faces promoting the brand.

Soulful Songstress Melanie Fiona (pictured below) uses the Tui Hair Oil and Almond Cookie She Souffle to condition her hair. I love the scent sweetness factor in both products. Additionally, beautiful Beyonce revealed in In Style that one of her skin obsessions is “Carol’s Daughter-I like to try them all” highlighting body butters like Mango Melange and Jamaican Punch in her spread.
