In any business that involves at team, especially in fashion, entertainment, but even in corporate offices, you are only as strong as your “weakest link”. Supermodel Jourdan Dunn, shared her experience with racism in the modeling world with one particular makeup artist and when asked to offer more information about her interaction, Dunn responded with logic. “Here’s my thing, if you’re a makeup artist you should be able to do any type. And if you’re a hairstylist you should be able to do any type of hair. It’s just hair, it’s just skin. You need to know your stuff.”
This means, if you are a photographer, hair stylist, or makeup artist. You don’t ever want to lose a job or rebooking because you limit who your client can hire as a model.
When it comes to individual choices in fashion, makeup, and overall how you look, judgements seem to go hand-in-hand. Whether you’re a student, Christina Aguilera, and even Secretary of State, it seems the Fashion Police are on the prowl to asses your attire or lack of and openly critique what you have on. Hilary Clinton has been on the onslaught of media attention for her fashion, hair, and makeup choices to which she responded beautifully with; “I feel so relieved to be at the stage I’m at in my life right now. Because you know if I want to wear my glasses I’m wearing my glasses. If I want to wear my hair back I’m pulling my hair back. You know at some point it’s just not something that deserves a lot of time and attention. And if others want to worry about it, I let them do the worrying for a change.”
I rarely read, and actually don’t care about Best Dressed and Worst Dressed list, or complete articles bashing one’s attire’ none of that interests me. My cue to go grab drinks is when I’m with a group and one member gestures about another patron about her dress being too small or ‘she shouldn’t wear that because blah, blah, blah’. I appreciate those who love fashion and I appreciate those who use fashion and styling as a form of individual expression. When I get ready for my day, I tend to play music, put on makeup, and when it comes to my attire I think about what I’m doing for the day and how my outfit will function in it. From time to time, I get compliments on my outfit, and sometimes I get less-than-stellar reviews ranging from it being too revealing, too-this-too-that, too covered. None of that at this point in my life, good or bad, really changes the scope of my day because: 1.) I realize that I’m most comfortable in bikinis, lingerie, or t-shirt and undies. But, I know I can’t wear that to work, school or grocery shopping, so I just make sure I put on something clean (I prefer jeans and a top), 2.) Keep bodypart displays in twos. Two is my comfort number. If I show cleavage, I may show leg or back but not all three. If I show midriff, I may show leg but most likely not cleavage. 3.) If I get a less-than-stellar review on my outfit and it bothers me, I generally just remind myself of my actual interest in fashion which is minimal and it seems to make my stress level about that comment diminish.
South African beauty Candice Swanepoel, can do no wrong in getting a great photo. The blonde bombshell looks amazing in Rag & Bone’s latest Fall 2011 ad campaign. The campaign features shots of Swanepoel looking very natural and relaxed at the beach while serving up some come hither stares, even when she is looking away from the lens.

Katy Perry, David Beckham, Estelle, Method Man, Derrick Rose, B.o.B., and more have signed up to be part of what should be an iconic campaign for Adidas. However, when I first saw Katy Perry as part of the latest and most star-studded set of brand ambassadors for Adidas, I couldn’t help but wonder how would Katy Perry’s quirky style be infused into the sportswear line. But, alas, with a french fries inspired bathing suit and ballet flats with wings, Adidas is more than on par to accomodate its most unique fashionistas.
Katy Perry’s bright yellow leotard is actually the Jeremy Scott Fries suit. Priced at $80, the suit is inspired by Scotts’ Fall 2006 “Eat the Rich” line. The bold print of a brightly colored leotard looks absolutely delicious on Katy Perry. Additionally, the red tracksuit jacket is part of the Firebird 1 Track tops which is priced at $65. There are plenty of colors to choose from from green, white, to Katy’s red. From looking at the selections, Katy is actually wearing the mens version, which some women may prefer because of the fit. However, the women’s versions have variations of pink and other fun and feminine colors.
Adidas has come a long way since it was founded over half a century ago. The brand uniquely known for it’s stripes has adapted with fashion and changing markets to always deliver sportswear that is not only functional but fashionable. From their relationships with designs like Stella McCarthy and Jeremy Scott, they have been able to create a perfect blend of fashions that promote art and athleticism. And their latest pair of white ballet flats with wings? well that is definitely All Katy… and could be All You. Good Job Team Adidas!
David Beckham knows a few things about bodywear from being both a professional soccer player and model for the Emporio Armani underwear line. Which is why it may not come to that much of a shock that he is dipping his talents into the line of intimate fashions. Beckham already shares a his and her line of perfume with her fashion designer wife, Victoria Beckham. David Beckham shared ”I have had the idea of doing a bodywear collection for some time now. The push to do something of my own really came as a result of my collaboration with Armani.”
Beckham added, “With my team we have spent time working on the fit, the fabric and the style to ensure the product looks and feels the very best and I am hugely proud of the end result. I can’t wait to show people the collection – although I’m not sure my mum will be too happy seeing a billboard image of me in underwear again.” His wife Victoria shared the news through her twitter.
Kate Moss stars in the latest Dior ad for the Iconic Lipstick. Showing off a pretty pout as well as featuring music by Duran Duran, the Jonas Akerland directed 90-second spot, is a montage of fashion, glamour, Moss and most importantly the tagline ‘Be Iconic’. Check is out below.
I’ve always been a fan of Jennifer Aniston’s look, from her hair and skin to her Beachy Bohemian style. Aniston has a style of her own, even in red carpet events she incorporates a fun side braid or her trademark glow to always bring a charismatic warmth and personality to her overall look. But, what I love most is her day-to-day style, that is both relaxed yet stylish. Now you will soon be able to get Aniston’s fresh of the resort style.
Retail giant Target, has already teamed up with fashion designers like the late Alexander McQueen, Anna Sui, Rodarte, Proenza Schouler, and is now teaming up with a brand that is worn by the likes of Jennifer Aniston and Kate Beckinsale. Target’s latest designer collaboration is Calypso St. Barth which will debut in early May. “The Calypso St. Barth for Target collection is timed perfectly for summer and offers our guests destination-chic style at incredible prices,” Target’s senior vice president of merchandising Trish Adams said. The prices will range from $1.99 to $79.99.
From The City to the pages of Maxim, Whitey Port is kicking off the new year with a surprise at least in the January edition of Maxim.
Whitney Port may be known for being one of the more polished members to come out of reality television, with successful fashion internships and becoming a budding fashion designer, as well as having a personal style that leans more toward sophisticated than crass. However, Port does have the ability to change roles as she revealed behind the scenes pics from her Maxim shoot on her blog. On delving into a shoot that is a far cry from the looks she delivers on the red carpet, Port said “I had so much fun stepping into this sexier, more risque role for the shoot. It was definitely different from anything I’ve done before which made it that much more exciting for me! I loved every minute of the shoot and I’m really happy with how the spread turned out!”Images courtesy of Whitney Port and Maxim
Last September, Tom Ford held a fashion show that was less about publicity and more about fashion. The super secret show featured Ford’s return to women’s wear as fashions were modeled by the likes of Beyonce, Lauren Hutton, Liya Kebede and Daphne Guinness. Some think 2 inches is every day, 3 inches is party time, and 4 inches well, if you can walk in them then bless your sole. Maybe you prefer a kitten heel or perhaps you love your Louboutins like Jennifer Lopez. Stilettos from the clickity-clack sound and pointed tip have always been an iconic staple in Bombshell wardrobes from Marilyn Monroe to Jessica Rabbit. When a woman is wearing heels you always hear her coming and want to know where she is going. But, just like any other fashion, there are always styles, colors, and material to choose from. I personally like boots with a stiletto heel made of black suede. Whether you want a patent leather finish, or a maryjane style, or satin, there is a stiletto out there for everyone. Now you can buy them for any occasion Air Jordan’s make high-heeled sneakers and now Tevas (Yes the sports sandal maker) has teamed up with Grey Ant to create a sure impressionable stiletto/sandal combo that is sure to catch attention, especially when worn with socks. For a mere $330 you can own a pair of stilettos that is as eye catching as a high-heeled pair of Uggs.
Did you know that this years Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show required 125lbs of glitter? The Angels return to New York for this years fashion show with a list that includes 9 Olympic gymnasts, 180-hours per Angel-wing, and 18 make-up artists to allow this early holiday treat to be broadcast in 185 countries. How Sexy is Victoria’s Secret? Let them count the ways.
I hope everyone is in good spirits and doing well. I have been getting your emails and I’m trying to keep up with my promise to respond as much as possible. I’ve also been having camera issues which is why I’ve been taking less photos which has been a question I’ve been getting. I’ve been getting several emails regarding a few current event topics and self-esteem issues. I think there is so much to be said about self-esteem, beauty, dealing with negative people (haters!) but I just wanted to just share a little bit about myself to be really honest and open with you all. I’ve replied to emails and shared some things and answer questions but in case you just look here time to time I just wanted to say that I’ve been picked on before, I’ve had people say and do really hurtful and mean things to me, and I can admit without regret at times I’ve let it break me down, but I didn’t let it destroy me. Today on my facebook I wrote an update and said:
‘I decided…’ is one of the most powerful words you can ever utter. It shows stregth and responsibility even when fear and confusion exists. It shows commitment and willingness to endure a longer and harder path even if you have to do it on your own. Whatever your problem is; beauty, finances, self esteem, employment, family, you can begin on the path to overcome by saying ‘I decided…’

I meant what I said in writing that. I’ve looked up to several people growing up, one of them being Tyra Banks, who we know as a model, talk show host, judge on ANTM and many other things being the mogul she is. But one of the things that I have learned from her words is when she once spoke about ‘being relatable’ and the challenges that come with it. Tyra Banks, just like myself, and many of your favorite celebrities and role models have at some point have had to deal with negativity, violence, harassment, etc. From Tyra Banks I learned that I too want to be relatable and one day ‘I decided…’ that if someone said something negative to me about the way I think, look, or act that it was not ok but also not going to change the course of my life. Of course it still hurt but the beautiful thing about it that I’m experiencing now as an adult is that I meet kids and teens now who express the same emotions that I felt and I can tell them I too can relate. While the current campaign against bullying has been focused more one sexuality and seen as a ‘new issue’; it is anything but. I believe various types of harassment do not just affect one segment of our population, it’s just due to current events and media, often one face becomes the poster child for a problem that affects so many people such as eating disorders, poverty, AIDS/HIV, etc.
Actress Brittany Snow and MTV has launched the ‘Love is Louder’ Campaign. Disney Lovato has been involved with several anti-bullying campaigns.
Which follows a number of other celebrities, organizations, clubs, and promotions that send the same message that you are not alone, we all have the power to take part in making a positive environment, and that your life is worth it.
The worst thing you can do is throw your life away especially because another person makes you feel your life is not as valuable or promising as theirs. Don’t throw your life away with drugs, cutting your education short, or harming yourself or others. As Ellen Degeneres has said on her show “Things will get easier, peoples’ minds will change, and you should be alive to see it.”
I know this isn’t a makeup or ‘beauty’ post so with that said I did do a review on an affordable mineral makeup which I’m using in the photo below. I do believe beauty is not skin deep but rather something that radiates through our spirit and compassion for humanity.
Sketches for the upcoming 2010 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show show the inclusion of a boxing theme. This is not a surprising theme noting that some of the Angels use boxing as a way to tone up and look great in their undies for the celebrated fashion show.
Australian beauty Miranda Kerr says her exercise regime is fairly consistent when working on shoots for Victoria’s Secret swimwear collection added her regime “always involves a mix of yoga, low-impact cardio, resistance and functional exercise, combined with high energy training such as a boxing or running”. However, Kerr may not be in this year’s event as the newlywed is currently pregnant.
But, fellow Angel Candice Swanepoel (pictured center between Alessandra Ambrosio and Miranda Kerr) who also models for Beach Bunny swimwear is expected to strut down the aisle. Swanepoel says “I love to box regularly, but I really step it up at the gym before a shoot. Sometimes I’ll work out the morning before a job so my muscles are active and more toned. That, plus a nice, healthy breakfast keeps my energy up for the rest of the day”.
Other Angels like Adriana Lima use jump-ropes and squats to gear up for the Fashion Show. While Sports Illustrated covermodel and California Native Marisa Miller also boxes. See the video below to watch Miller who posed for GQ alongside the other Angels endure her boxing regime. The Victoria’s Secret 2010 Fashion Show will air Nov. 30 on CBS and will include Transformer 3 starlet Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and fashion model Chanel Iman.
Actress, designer, fashion icon, and mother Nicole Richie has been busy working on her Winter Kate Spring look book shoot. But she took time out to twitpic herself and company hard at work eating fried chicken and playing with a pineapple; maybe they are props? Richie is also the September editor of Who, What, Wear!
Elle magazine turns 25, but not without controversy. The magazine has released four different covers and four different starlets to celebrate their 25th anniversary. Controversy regards questions of whether Gabriel Sidibe skin was lightened by retouch for the cover, and people wondering why Sidebe cover was shot chest up while other starlets like Megan Fox, Lauren Conrad, and Amanda Seyfried were shown on covers featuring their bodies as well as their face. In response, Elle has said “We have four separate covers this month and Gabby’s cover was not retouched any more of less than the others.” The magazine added”We had 25 cover-worthy subjects in our portfolio and we chose Gabby because of who she is”. Elle also said “We shot this as a story of exuberant young women changing the world. If you take a look at the portfolio, each of the women were shot in different ways for different reasons”.
I have been a reader of Elle since I was freshman in high school. Having seen the portfolio which includes photos of Mila Kunis, Meghan McCain, and other young women, I can see what the magazine is trying to contend. While I understand the arguments people are tying to make, I believe Elle is a fashion magazine in an industry often criticized for not having enough Black representation and plus-size models. Sidibe is on 1 of the 4 covers, and the magazine out of 25 other women chose her to be on the cover, if I were her friend I would call that a milestone within the fashion world. Elle turns 25 this year, a magazine that has in the past featured a variety of shapes and skin tones, when I still believe that are doing today. Elle turns 25 which is a publications own miles, just like Tommy Hilfiger. I don’t believe the controversy put out there about cover choices is a reflection of Elle, but rather a comment on how some people think in this country. Sidibe just like, Fox, Seyfried, and Conrad shares a smile and a cover, and I think that is what is most important. Just like beauty; fashion is for everyone, and I believe Elle expresses the same belief. On another note, Kate Hudson is on the UK edition of Elle.
The stars came out to attend Tommy Hilfiger’s fashion show and celebration at Lincoln Center. Tommy Hilfiger celebrated his brand’s 25th anniversary with stars like pop star Jennifer Lopez, actor Bradley Cooper, model Petra Nemcova, rocker Lenny Kravitz, and actress Christina Hendricks of Mad Men. Kristen Bell also praised the designer’s duds from a recent fashion show telling People magazine; “I thought it was delicious. I loved the whole red, white and blue feel. I very much gravitate toward the all-American which is kind of Tommy’s M.O.” Rebecca Romijn also shared love for Hilfiger saying “I love Tommy Hilger himself” adding, “And I’m grateful to him and what he’s done for my career. I’m happy to be here.” Although throughout the brand’s growing career even Oprah Winfrey herself came out in defense of Hilfiger in order to discount defamatory remarks that the brand and Hilfiger himself were racist. Winfrey said “Read my lips, Tommy Hilfiger has never appeared on this show”, in response to people saying that Hilfiger admitted his ‘racism’ on the program. Winfrey added “And all of [the] people who claim that they saw it, they heard it, –it never happened. I’ve never even met Tommy Hilfiger”. See photos and videos of some face that may look familiar to you. You may or may not know many stars we know today today have been part of the Hilfiger brand such as Romign, Kate Hudson, Tyrese Gibson and the late and great Aaliyah have modeled for the brand. Singer & Actress. Also the young cast of “The Faculty” starring Elijah Wood, Josh Hartnett, and Usher were dressed in Tommy Hilfiger fashions for cross-promotional advertising.Beyonce Knowles also became the face of True Star and True Star Gold, both are fragrances created by Hilfiger. True Star Men also featured singer Enrique Inglesias as the spokesperson.Over a decade ago, Tommy Hilfiger announced that Tommy Jeans would sponsor the North American tour for a then fresh-face up and coming pop-starlet Britney Spears for her album ….Baby One More Time. That same year, Hilfiger proclaimed 1999 is the “Year of Music”
