You may have noticed the flurry of red equal signs taking over Facebook and Twitter. The Human Rights Campaign, which advocates equal rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, has been promoting an image of a pink equal sign over a red background instead of its traditional blue-and-yellow logo to mobilize supporters online since the Supreme Court began its hearings on gay marriage in Washington. But did you also notice some of your favorite brands and television shows also throwing their support to the consumers, employees and fans of their products? Brands like, Budweiser, Smirnoff, Rain Cosmetics, and shows like True Blood threw their support in the ring over the past week with photos on their social media outlets.

For me, I can appreciate companies that give back to causes that are inclusive whether it be for the environment, education, LGBT causes, etc. Reason being, because whether the company is new or have been around for decades, it’s nice to feel that you are consuming something that shares your ethics or at the very least isn’t something that conflicts against your feelings. While some companies have increased the loyalty of their fan-base by being divisive, they have lost fans and alienated those who may have thought to one day be employed by them, consume or otherwise use their brand.

I don’t drink, but since Bud Light showed their support, I might actually smile playing the DD role when driving a Bud Light drinker while I’m wearing my Rain Cosmetics eyeliner, waiting to go home to watch True Blood while I figure out which signature Smirnoff creation I want at my wedding.
